Flavours of Cyprus

My travels are about food. Yes there are a lot of other things that interest me when it comes to travelling but food is always my top priority. Of course I love the experience of eating but I also love learning about ingredients, flavours and recipes.

I am always interested in finding and sampling the traditional cuisine which shape each countries food culture. It is hard when trying to maintain weight whilst travelling. Even though you walk more than ever when you are investigating each new destination, you seem to eat way more calories because you want to try everything. Portion sizes vary so each place you go to you need to work out your ordering system so you don’t constantly over eat. If I was only going for a week or two then I wouldn’t be so worried but we are backpacking for a year so we have to maintain a healthy lifestyle from the beginning.

Meals that I have enjoyed the most have been the typical dishes of Cyprus, the home cooking that is simple and fresh.  It is amazing how flavoursome good produce is when all it needs is a bit of olive oil, a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a pinch of salt and a cheeky dash of wine. Sautéed mushrooms were the star of one of our meals and the following night the char grilled octopus was also a favourite for me. These low calorie ingredients are just what the ‘naturopath’ ordered in a bread loving country.

These are the best mushrooms I have ever eaten in my life! So simply made with olive oil, white wine, salt and parsley.

My favourite low calorie dish from Cyprus. This is my kind of food!

It has been a challenge to try and eat healthy on a budget and when you are backpacking for so long you have to do the best you can for your body and your pocket. We have been lucky that the portions in Cyprus have been very generous and my hubby and I have easily managed to share a main dish and a vegetable based side dish for each meal.
